HCA participates in Spiritual Care Australia Conference

Spiritual Care Australia organised a three-day conference in Sydney this year, covering a wide range of topics and workshops. These included spiritual care for the elderly, aged care, dementia and palliative care patients, spiritual safety, and training healthcare professionals in spiritual care.

Spiritual Care Australia is a professional association of practitioners in spiritual care, pastoral care and chaplaincy and the peak Australian body for Spiritual Care, Spiritual Care Australia (SCA) recognises the importance of having professional, skilled, and experienced practitioners whose capabilities and competence can be assessed and credentialed according to a capabilities framework.

Sai Paravastu, the National President of HCA and a board member of Spiritual Care Australia, actively participated in all three days of the conference. He hosted keynote programs as the MC and took part in panel discussions.

The conference’s final day featured a panel discussion titled ‘Appreciating and Celebrating Diversity in Spiritual Care,’  with representatives from different religions such as Rabbi Gabbi from the Jewish community, Professor Mehmet from Islam, and Sai Paravastu from the Hindu community.

Sai discussed the importance of spiritual care within Hinduism and the Hindu community, emphasizing the significance of respecting Hindu employees and their beliefs. Sai highlighted how spirituality is deeply rooted in Hindus from birth, with each day dedicated to different deities to enhance spiritual growth, and how astrology serves as a guide on their spiritual journey.

It was stressed to show respect to Hindu staff by acknowledging if it’s a special day for them, inquiring about fasting or the need for rest, honouring the symbolic attire they wear, ensuring they feel empowered to practice their faith and customs freely at work, and encouraging them to display their religious symbols without hesitation openly.

Patterns of Creative Spiritual Care conference is the premier event highlighting and supporting the work of pastoral care, spiritual care, and chaplaincy in Australia.
