The theme for Discussion: The Beatitudes
Spiritual Teachings of Jesus in the Light of Vedanta
Sermon on the Mount According to Vedanta
The Sermon on the Mount According to Vedanta is a transcribed version of a series of popular talks Swami Prabhavananda gave at the Vedanta Society’s Centre in Hollywood in the 1970s. The Swami highlights the numerous parallels between Christ’s teachings and the classic texts of Hinduism.
SWAMI PRABHAVANANDA (December 26, 1893 – July 4, 1976) monk of the Ramakrishna Order, was sent from India to assist his brother monks in America in 1923. He subsequently founded, in 1930, the Vedanta Society of Southern California. The Swami spent the rest of his life there, writing and collaborating with some of the most distinguished authors and intellectuals of the time, including Aldous Huxley, Christopher Isherwood, Somerset Maugham and Gerald Heard
From Swami’s talk on the Beatitudes:
- Every spiritual teacher, whether he is a divine incarnation or an illumined soul, has two sets of teachings – one for the multitude, the other for his disciples.
- The inner truth of religion he reveals only to his intimate disciples. Religion is something that can actually be transmitted. A truly illumined teacher can transmit to us the power which unfolds the divine consciousness latent within us.
Our discussions tap into the wisdom of major world faiths and thinkers relating them to our daily life. You’re welcome to share your insights, experiences, and doubts with the group.
