NSW Labor Leader Jodi McKay MP’s Private Members Statement regarding the current India travel ban

By: Jodi McKay, MP, NSW LABOR LEADER

There are 173 Australian children stranded in India without their parents. Australian citizens have been told they face fines of up to $66,000 and five years in prison if they attempt to return home. No such bans were ever introduced when Australians returned from the USA and UK during peak levels of COVID-19 transmission.

Our Indian Australian community feels this ban is discriminatory and racially motivated. I implored those in the chamber tonight to imagine a situation where you’re told you are no longer welcome in your own country.

The Australian and NSW Governments have a duty of care to their citizens.

We must do better to help our Indian Australian community.
