The True Nature of the Universe – Mantras 1-5 Isha Upanishad
  • Questions/ Answers/ Discussion

PRAVRAJIKA SRIDHARAPRANA continues her special presentations on the Upanishads with a series of three lectures on the Isha Upanishad commencing this Sunday.

In this Talk: Deals with the real nature of our world, prescribing disciplines to be practised by the unillumined aspirants and warns of the dangers of not recognising the spiritual aspect of one’s personality.

Using paradoxical language, the Upanishad describes That which cannot be described.

Coming Up:

18 June – The Nature of Reality – Mantras 6 to 11

Describes the exalted state of a knower of Brahman. Mantras 6 & 7 describe the nature of Atman, while mantras 9,10,11 synthesise action and contemplation.

16 July – Prayer to the Universal Soul – Mantras 12 to 18

Mantras 12 to 14, whose real meanings are obscure and open to interpretation, deal with actions which bear two different types of results. In the last four mantras, the Upanishad describes the prayerful mood of aspirants who have fallen short of their final goal.

Isha Upanishad

Belongs to the Shukla- Yajur Veda. One of the oldest Upanishads, deriving its name from the first word of its opening mantra: Isavasyam (God pervades all this). It’s an Upanishad featuring the simplest yet most profound utterances. Interestingly, it also contains obscure passages explained differently by different commentators.

We’ll primarily follow Sankaracharya’s views to understand what it means from our perspective.
