Themes for Discussion

Chapter 7 –

The Yoga of Knowledge and Realization – Verses 29 to 30

  • Beyond Old Age & Death: Old age and death: dreaded twins that hang over us, that seek to taunt us. But it needn’t be so. We can remove their sting if we have the conviction, the experience, that we’re more than just a body, that the essence of us lives on.
  • The Six ‘Waves of Change’: Shankaracharya states in the Vivekachudamani: All living beings, all that exists, including the solar system and the galactic systems beyond; are subject to six changes: birth, existence, growth, evolution, decay and death. But behind all this change is the changeless, the eternal; such was the discovery of the ancient Indian sages.
  • Facing Death Like a Friend: Here’s the challenge. When death comes to us, can we face it ‘with the greatest sense of assurance, greatest sense of peace’? Of course, death sometimes comes unexpectedly, tragically. But for most of us, we see its creeping approach. A great transition – that’s how Vedanta views death – another step in our journey, vacating a worn-out body to take up a new one.
  • The Witness: Yes, we are being watched. Throughout our waking hours, while we dream, even in our deepest sleep, the sākṣi, the witness, the ever-existing Reality, sees all.

Join the discussion led by Pravrajika Gayatriprana.

Bhagavad Gita:
Join our exploration of a spiritual classic that’s enriched cultures throughout Asia over the centuries and inspired leading figures in modern times from Mohandas Gandhi, Albert Einstein, Carl Jung, and Aldous Huxley to astronaut Sunita Williams who took a copy of the Bhagavad Gita to the international space station.

We’re dipping into Swami Ranganathananda’s 3 volume commentary: Universal Message of the Bhagavad Gita. The late President of the Ramakrishna Order, the Swami was a world thinker and cultural ambassador for India, sponsored by the Government to travel to over 50 countries around the world giving lectures.
