Hindu Council of Australia

Caught in the Crossfire Again

Once again, our community finds itself caught in the crossfire of debates we did not create. On 31st August, rallies are being organised across Australia protesting against migration, and unfortunately, Indians have been singled out as an example. This is disappointing, especially in a nation that has thrived because of the contributions of people from all corners of the world.

Earlier this year and late last year, Hindus in Australia were unfairly dragged into unrelated issues. When antisemitic graffiti was sprayed on Jewish synagogues, the media casually used the word “swastika”, leaving Hindu children wondering why their sacred symbol and their community were being wrongly associated with hate. Now, once again, young Australians of Indian heritage are asking why they are being targeted in discussions that should have nothing to do with them.

To our community, my message is simple: stay calm, stay safe, and do not get provoked. If you experience or witness racism, insult, or discrimination, please report it to the authorities immediately. Our strength has always been in living by the law, contributing positively to Australian society, and standing tall as proud citizens.

Let us remember who we are: responsible, hardworking, and law-abiding citizens who have enriched Australia through our culture, our skills, and our values. Stay safe, stay united, and stand tall with pride in both our heritage and our contribution to this beautiful country.
