The Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW) (ADA) is an important law in NSW. It prohibits discrimination, vilification, sexual harassment and victimisation. It also provides a way for people to address such conduct by making a complaint. The Law Reform Commission is to examine the ADA and, where necessary, make recommendations for change.
The written feedback submission process is now live and will be open from Tuesday, 20 May to Friday, 20 June 2025.
Hindu Council met with the Chair of the Law Reform Commission and asked it to consider following changes :
- Religious discrimination should be an offence with some guard rails for free speech.
- Religious bodies (schools, temples etc.) should be allowed to preference hiring staff of their own faith.
- This should be balanced by making Religious Coercion an offence.
Hindu Council is making a formal submission about Religious Coercion i.e. it should be illegal to force someone to observe the practices of another faith against their Will. The submission is being made by our legal counsel Ashutosh Agarwal. If you wish to ask him to include any point, please write to him at info@hinducouncil.com.au
