In 1965, Catholic Church examined her relationship to non-Christian religions and came up with a declaration known as NOSTRA AETATE. In the last paragraph of this declaration, the Church declared NOT to discrimination against men or harassment of them because of their race, colour, condition of life, or religion.
An annual interfaith conference of Catholic Bishops is held to discuss the state of interfaith relations. Hindu Council participated in the event last year and again this year and raised following points.
In 1965, there were very few Hindus in Australia. Hindus came to Australia in significant numbers only during last 25 years or so. During this period, interactions between Hindus and Catholic happens in two areas. One area is Interfaith forums where Hindus and Catholic along with other faiths leaders discuss harmony and issues of common interest to all faiths.
The second area of interaction in in the area of education. A large number of Hindu students study in Catholic schools. Most Hindu parents are happy with their choice and Hindu children have not faced discrimination based on their race, colour or religion. There have been some issues arising out of ignorance of Catholic teachers about Hindu faith. However, when these were pointed out to the school authorities, they amended their policies and practices to take care of the discrimination.
What is your experience if your child is going to a Christian school. Are you happy with your child’s rights to his/her Hindu faith. Have you ever faced discrimination from them. If you have any concerns, please write to info@hinducouncil.com.au
