November 24th marks the martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru, who sacrificed his life to protect the fundamental human right of freedom of religion. This poignant occasion serves as a powerful reminder of the Guru’s unwavering commitment to upholding the values of justice, compassion, and tolerance.
In 1675, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was approached by Kashmiri Pandits, who were being forcibly converted to Islam by the Mughal Empire. The Guru, determined to protect their right to practice their faith, took a bold stand against the Empire’s tyranny. Despite being imprisoned, tortured, and eventually beheaded in Delhi, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji remained resolute in his conviction, inspiring countless others to stand up for their rights and freedoms.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s martyrdom is a testament to the enduring power of courage, conviction, and compassion. His legacy continues to inspire people of all faiths and backgrounds to strive for a world where everyone can live with dignity, respect, and freedom. He is also known as Dharam Di Chadar (i.e. “the shield of Religion”), or Hind Di Chadar (Shield of India).
As we commemorate Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s Martyrdom Day, let us reflect on the importance of upholding human rights, promoting interfaith understanding, and fostering a culture of tolerance and acceptance.
