UNESCO scholars research on the necessity of a Hindu School in Sydney

Two well known International scholars and experts of faith based education were visiting Sydney to attend an Educational Symposium in Sydney. Hindu Council of Australia took the opportunity to take them around to meet the team from HEACC which has been working for many years to establish first Hindu School in Sydney.  Professors told the team that they are looking forward to coming again when the school is fuull of students.

The scholars also visited a number of Hindu temples and spent time with Hindu Council members to understand roots of Hinduism and how it is practiced in Australia.

The Professors  recently undertook world-leading research outlining that the role of education in Australian schools is vital to increasing social harmony, combating religious bullying and enhancing social cohesion – and that NSW is leading the way. Faith NSW (state branch of BBF) said the research showed that religious bullying in schools is a significant challenge that needs a tailored approach.

Professor Zehavit Gross is the Chair of the Holocaust

Education Program and is a faculty member at Bar-Ilan University’s School of Education.  Professor Gross is a consultant for UNESCO and other organizations. She has received several awards and her expertise has impacted Holocaust education globally, shaping curricula and informing teaching practices. Through her work, Gross aims to ensure the lessons of the Holocaust are preserved and transmitted to future generations.

Professor Suzanne Rutland is a prominent Australian historian and scholar specializing in Jewish studies, Australian Jewish history, and Holocaust studies. She is an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Sydney.  She has received several awards for her research and community service, including the Australian Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in History. Her expertise has informed cultural institutions, educational programs, and community organizations, enriching the understanding of Jewish history and identity in Australia.

General Religious Education in Secondary Schools

Hindu Council has been involved with the NSW Department of School Education since 2003 in drafting the original syllabus which was introduced in 2005. Cambridge University Press published the textbook for the course covering all the five religions. In 2015 we were again consulted by the publishers when the updated version of the textbook was published.

E-course on Hindu Religion

This course is designed to provide an overview of Hindu Religion and is suitable for non-Hindus to gain a very brief understanding of the Hindu religion.

A brief syllabus of the course “Introduction to Hindu Religion” is given below.

Introduction (Sanatan dharma, Definitions, Denominations and Diversity, Unity, Colonial influences), Beliefs, Purusharthas, Philosophies, Karma, Moksha, Concept of God, Traditions, Symbols, Scriptures, Rituals and Ceremonies, Rites of Passage, Bhakti, Festivals, Pilgrimage, Varnas, Yoga, Ahimsa, Vegetarianism, Temples, Ashramas of Life, Sanyasa, , Attitude of others, Hindu Religion in Australia.
