Sharad Purnima

23 October

Sharad Purnima is considered to be the most beautiful night of the year. It is celebrated on the full moon night of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin when the full moon is especially bright. The most famous Sharad Purnima night of all occurred around 5000 years ago. On this particular evening, as the moon rose on the eastern horizon, the whole sky was tinged with a reddish hue. The forests were filled with fragrant flowers and a cool breeze carried the aroma far and wide, creating an especially festive atmosphere.

Bhagavan Sri Krishna pushed fragrant mallika flowers behind His ears and stood on the bank of the Yamuna river where He lifted His celebrated flute to His lips and began to play. The sweet, transcendental flute music captivated the hearts of His dear devotees, the gopi maids of Vraja and drew them towards Him.  Celestial beings gathered to watch in amazement and shower flowers from the sky as Sri Krishna expanded Himself into innumerable forms to stand beside each gopi maiden. Together they performed the wondrous Rasa Lila dance of spiritual love under the light of the beautiful autumn moon. Sri Krishna, all attractive, supremely lovable Supreme Lord appears in this world from time to time and displays His wonderfully uncommon pastimes, inviting the wandering souls back to His eternal abode.
