The Hindu Council of Australia is deeply disturbed by the Sydney café siege incident. It is unfortunate that such an event took place in Australia and innocent people fell prey to the misguided motives of radicalism.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of Sydney Lawyer Katrina Dawson and Café Manager Tori Johnson who left for their heavenly abode following the extremist incident.
We urge everyone in Australia to stand united in this hour of struggle and help the families of the victims in spirit.
“Innocent people being killed in the name of religious fanaticism is not acceptable. Acts of violence are not a part of any civilized society and we should all look at them with zero tolerance. Any amount of leniency will pave paths for more such acts,” said Nihal Agar, President, Hindu Council of Australia.
On Friday, 19 December 2014, Premier of New South Wales, Mike Baird and Communities Minister Victor Dominello have called for a multi-faith prayer session to appeal for peace and bring about communal harmony following the siege.
“Such acts are indeed disturbing and we are representing the Hindu society at the multi-faith prayer session. The victims of the siege will be in our thoughts and we will pray for more strength to the families of the victims to deal with this greatest of all losses,” added Mr Agar.

We believe that the right to extremism and religious fanaticism should be treated as secondary in progressive societies such as Australia.
