By: Manjari Fergusson, ASMY.

One of the most auspicious and festive days of the year is upon us!

Sri Krishna Janmashtami falls on Saturday, 24 August 2019, and is a time of worldwide jubilant celebrations to mark the birthday of Sri Krishna. These festivities can continue for weeks at a time, such is the enthusiasm and exuberance of Krishna’s devotees during this time of year.

Across Australia, the auspicious advent of Sri Krishna is being honoured with bright and colourful festivities that include inspiring Vedic stories, uplifting kirtans, peaceful mantra meditations, bathing ceremonies (abishekam), and of course delightful Indian feasts!

Below you will find a list of events in Australia’s major cities hosted by the Australian School of Meditation & Yoga for anyone and everyone to join in!

From its ancient beginnings, the festival of Janmashtami is now a worldwide celebration
bringing together millions of people from all cultures and religious backgrounds. No matter where you are, you can come together with your family and friends to celebrate the universally renowned jewel of yoga wisdom and the embodiment of spiritual love – The Supreme Soul, Bhagavan Sri Krishna.

In the great Vedic scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna tells us that He is the original father, our refuge, our support, and our dear most friend.

“I am the goal, I am the sustainer, the master, the witness, the abode, the refuge and the most dear friend. I am the creation and the annihilation. I am the basis of everything, the resting place and the eternal seed. I am the seed giving father of all living beings.”(Bhagavad Gita 9:18)

When we speak of Krishna, we are speaking of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the cause of all causes, the original person. He appeared in this world over 5,000 years ago in His original transcendental form, making it possible for us to meditate upon Him and hear His transcendental instructions.

A beautiful description of the most auspicious occasion of Sri Krishna’s appearance is found in the ancient Bhagavata Purana:

“On the night Krishna was born, all directions were peaceful. Auspicious stars shone in the sky and rivers flowed full of water, beautifully decorated with blooming lotus flowers. Birds in the forests sang and peacocks danced, the wind blew pleasantly and flowers rained from the sky. Angels and celestial beings rejoiced, offering prayers, dancing and singing. At the seashore there was the sound of mild waves and above the sea the clouds thundered pleasantly while the full moon rose in the sky.”
